hidden neighbors
hidden neighbors is my capstone research project. The focus is on homelessness; the misconceptions and the reality of the issue. hidden neighbors is meant to represent the rigid line that is drawn between the individuals on the outside of the issue who cast blame and judgment, and those on the inside of the issue who face the reality of homelessness. It is meant to show how we can easily break down common misconceptions if we are each willing to keep an open mind and abandon the opinions we have become conditioned to have. I would like my work to inspire viewers to challenge the way that bias and stereotypes are transferred throughout the public as well as realize the impact they have on those inside of the issue. The deliverables for the exhibition were the installation, exhibition take aways, a process book, and small booklets. Each panel for the installation, of which there were fifteen total were cut to size, sewed to be hung, and silkscreen printed. The exhibition takeaway cards listed the many ways—both minor and major—that one can help. Lastly, smaller booklets were created and mailed to all of the people who were interviewed as thank yous.
